Senior Living Housing Basic Definitions

At first look, Senior Housing Options can be a bit overwhelming.  As with any new subject, knowing some basic definitions or the “lingo” will help you navigate the information more easily.

For Active, Healthy Seniors:

Senior Apartments/55+ Apartments

AKA-Age restricted apartments, senior condos, 55+ condos, cottages and adult communities.  This option is great for older adults that prefer living near people from their own generation.

Independent Living/Retirement Communities

These communities could be single family houses built in an age restricted community like the Del Webb, Sun City subdivisions.  Or the community could be set up as an apartment, condo or cottage style property.  All kinds of amenities including restaurants, club house, social activities exist within the community, and the senior has their own private living quarters.

For Seniors Who Need Daily Support:

Assisted Living

Assisted living housing is a long term senior care option that provides a range of services such as meals, medication management, bathing, dressing and transportation, but typically not the 24-hour medical care found in a skilled nursing facility.  Other amenities can include meals, outings, social activities, some transportation, exercise programs and more.

Memory Care/Alzheimer’s Care

A special type of assisted living is a Memory care community.  Memory Care is specialized care for people who have Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia.  Residents live in a secure environment designed with specialized care based on their abilities and limitations.  The staff at memory care communities have extra training in dementia caregiving.

Nursing Homes/Skilled Nursing Facilities

Nursing Homes, or skilled nursing facilities, are for seniors who require the highest level of 24-hour care, including those who are bedridden.  Nursing Homes are also used by seniors for rehabilitation following a hospitalization.

Hopefully, this basic overview will help you narrow down what type of senior housing will work for your needs.  If you would like more information or to discuss your housing questions, please call me at 214-762-5544 or leave a comment.  I will be glad to help.
